ABOUT JULIA
Julia Florence is a ceramic artist making large scale and functional pieces inspired by her love of nature, bodies and clay itself. She studied illustration at Falmouth university before going on to learn how to make objects that aim to celebrate the medium as well as providing a canvas for her striking paintings. Florence’s studio at Morgans is alive with tropical plants and the pieces she creates that are forever rotating their way through the kiln at various stages in the process before they find their way into clients homes. You can usually find her throwing vases on the wheel or painting in a sunny spot.
This latest collection from Julia Florence draws inspiration from her love of natural objects and clay colours, with an exploration of simple thrown shapes and minimal decoration that first appealed to her when starting out as a potter. A recent visit to Greece, meeting some master potters and touring their studios reinvigorated Julia’s love of the medium of clay itself without the brightly coloured glazes she has previously worked with. Challenging herself by creating whimsical lifelike shells on delicate chain links strung around sturdy thrown vases was a beautiful study in patience and understanding of the possibilities and limits of clay. Finding balance in creating an object that is thoughtfully made without being overthought, this Summer collection includes calming shapes and imagery from nature, close to Julia’s every day life in Cornwall.
